Pinner Parish Church Jazz

2009-2010 Season

The credit crunch may be biting but here in Pinner we try to put aside such worrying concerns and concentrate on the brighter side of life. Our aim is to dispel gloom and rise above the strictures of high finance (no expenses shenanigans here) by continuing to bring you the best of jazz in all its infinite variety. Or most of it.

Unbelievably, the upcoming season is our twelfth – this in a sequence originally started by me on a bit of a whim. What seemed a nice idea at the time has blossomed into an established concert series of high quality with internationally renowned artists vying to play for us. Just think back to Bob Wilber’s concert last February – a mere few weeks after appearing so successfully for us, Bob was performing at Lincoln Center in New York with Wynton Marsalis and the LCJO, and then at the vast New Orleans Jazz Festival. A case of today Pinner, tomorrow the World. Or something like that.

As ever, we have tried to balance established bands with those run by young newcomers, inserting famous names alongside emerging stars, always seeking to blend thrusting creativity with musical sagacity. We’ve also decided to build on last season’s experiment, by presenting more concerts in the round, thus allowing improved sight lines and a greater sense of immediacy. We’re placing the piano further back than previously to allow a better view. We hope you approve. Please tell your friends about us and bring them along.

These Programme Notes have been written for us, as always, by Peter Vacher, who is also offering a Jazz Appeciation Course starting in January. If you are interested to browse through the Programme Notes for previous seasons, please select the links on the left.
