Pinner Parish Church Jazz Welcome to our eleventh season. Petrol prices are sky-high, food costs the earth, the country’s going to the dogs! Maybe so. Happily for us here at Pinner Parish Church, certain classic verities never change. For the past decade, we have presented programmes that seek to include the finest jazz talents around. We have consciously kept to the broad mainstream of the music, eschewing anything overtly avant-garde or self-consciously earthy or basic. We tend to stick to the middle ground you might call us the Lib-Dems of jazz! With that in mind, the net for the upcoming concert season has been cast far and wide. There are veterans here, as well as younger players. Some of these artists are new to Pinner; others return as old friends. All, it seems to us, are wedded to the idea that jazz music is to be enjoyed, that it’s not about dark nights of the soul, more that it’s about finding joy through creativity. We prefer to see faces smiling rather than brows furrowed. The late Humphrey Lyttelton played for us memorably on several occasions and we had hoped to invite him again this year. Sadly, that was not to be. The ever-genial Campbell Burnap was a great friend to us too, as both performer and broadcaster. His last appearance here teamed him with tenor-saxophonist Danny Moss, another who died during the close season, as did genial drummer Allan Ganley. All four were utterly distinctive and quite irreplaceable. We’d like to dedicate the new season to their memory.
